Observed annually on April 5, National Maritime Day commemorates the historic 1919 voyage of the SS Loyalty, a landmark in India’s modern shipping history. The maritime sector today handles nearly 90 per cent of the country’s trade by volume, making it a cornerstone of its economic framework.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to the sector, Modi said India would continue to harness its vast maritime potential to secure a prosperous future. His remarks come as the Centre accelerates efforts to modernise port infrastructure, promote coastal shipping and expand inland waterways to enhance logistics efficiency and trade competitiveness.

In recent years, the government has advanced flagship initiatives such as the Sagarmala Programme, alongside investments in shipbuilding, digitalisation and green shipping. These measures aim to position India as a major player in global maritime trade while generating employment and improving regional connectivity.

Modi’s message reflects a sustained policy focus on leveraging India’s extensive coastline and strategic location to boost economic growth and strengthen its standing in international trade networks.
